Molecular Ecology and Breeding of Subtropical Crops

The major research interests are focused on molecular mechanisms of stress tolerance of rice and drought tolerance of maize in the Karst area of China, molecular mechanisms of heterosis, novel gene discovery in super hybrid rice, hybrid rice breeding for abiotic and biotic stress tolerance, and hybrid maize breeding for abiotic stress tolerance in the subtropical region of China.

Staff members  

Two integrated research groups in molecular physiological mechanism and molecular breeding of stress-tolerant  crop  which  are  leading  by  Professor  James Xinjie Xia and Professor Guoying Xiao, respectively. 10 associated research staff and about 20 postgraduates are working in this theme.

Projects 

During  the  last five years  there  is  about 5 M (¥) research  funding  in   this  center, from  Hundred  Talents Programs of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Molecular mechanisms of stress tolerance and novel gene discovery in  super   hybrid rice) and  Project  of Knowledge  Innovation  of   Chinese  Academy   of   Sciences  (Adaptability mechanism of stress tolerance and genetic improvement of rice and maize in the subtropical region), and so on.

Achievement 

During the last decade, 15 new varieties and hybrid combinations have been approved and registered in rice and  maize respectively  by  Hunan Province  Government, and   7 conventional rice and maize hybrid combinations with   good  stress tolerance   are undergoing the regional trails and will be approved and registered in the future, a hybrid rice  variety  of transgenic resisting  herbicide  has   been approved by the Central Government to put into the regional trail and  food safety  evaluation,   several  candidate   genes are confirmed for submergence, chillness or drought tolerance, and several molecular makers are identified and used in breeding of submergence tolerant rice and drought tolerant maize.
