Education: gained a doctor degree of agriculture in crop genetics and breeding at South China Agricultural University (Guangzhou, China) in 1998, under the guidance of professor Longping Yuan, father of hybrid rice; obtained a master degree of science in genetics at Wuhan University (Wuhan, China) in 1990, under the supervision of professor Lihui Shu; got a bachelor degree of science in genetics at Wuhan University (Wuhan, China) in 1985. 
Positions held: professor and supervisor of doctoral students from 2002 to present at Institute of Subtropical Agriculture, Chinese Academy of Sciences (Changsha, China); visiting scholar from 2005 to 2006 at University of Missouri (Columbia, Missouri, USA); associate professor from 1999 to 2002 at China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Center (Changsha, China); research associate from 1999 to 2000 at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong, China); assistant professor from 1992 to 1998 at China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Center (Changsha, China); assistant from 1990 to 1992 at China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Center (Changsha, China); assistant from 1985 to 1987 at Central South Forestry Science and Technology University (Changsha, China).

Undertaking research projects: breeding of new transgenic rice varieties with herbicide resistance (supported by State Key Science and Technology Programme on Breeding of New Genetically Modified Organisms); utilization of rice heterosis and development of super hybrid rice (supported by The National Key Research and Development Project); breeding of new varieties of indica rice for early season (supported by The National Key Research and Development Project); molecular design and improvement of stress tolerance and nutrition utilization in rice (supported by Knowledge Innovation Program of Chinese Academy of Sciences); etc.
