UCR Prof. LI Bai-Lian Visits ISA
Prof. Li Bai-Lian, lifetime professor of Mathematical and Theoretical Ecology and Director in the University of California at Riverside (CAU-UCR), paid a visit to Institute of Subtropical Agriculture, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ISA) on Apr. 10, 2012.
Prof. Li delivered an academic report entitled “Ecological Complexity and Services in Agricultural Landscapes”. He firstly presented the concept and methodology of ecological complexity, ecosystem services, and ecological footprint and the applications of ecological complexity in structures and services of agricultural landscapes, and optimal ecosystem management. Then, he illuminated many research cases, such as how to regulate the ecosystem services, how to distinguish climate influences from human management, how to identify the long-term order and disorder of human disturbances to ecosystem and so on. In addition, he also suggested his latest research on scaling from genomes to ecosystems and a framework for science-driven synthesis. At last, he had a deep discussion with postgraduates and researchers on ecosystem management and regulation of ecosystem services and functions.
Li Bai-Lian served on many professional committees and review panels of federal funding agencies in U.S. and internationally. He is also Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the international journal: Ecological Complexity. He chairs International Scientific Committee of Eco Summit. What deserves to be mentioned is that Li is a tiny minority of overseas Chinese scientists who is active in the forefront of international ecology.
