The important progress of transgenic anti-herbicide hybrid rice
The transgenic anti-herbicide hybrid rice named “Fragrant 125S/Bar68-1” which breed by ISA has been completed the regional test of early rice in Hunan Province and the productive test approved by Ministry of Agriculture.
In 1996, the rice studying group in this institute has proposed the new route to remove false hybrids by introducing anti-herbicide gene to restorer rice. After more than 10 years concentrated study, the genetically modified hybrid rice “Fragrant 125S/Bar68-1” characterized with good quality, better resistance, high yield and strong adaptability. In addition, the field hybrid purity can be raised to more than 99.9% by spraying herbicides; the seed production risk and cost of seed companies greatly reduced for the reassurance using of the abandoned seeds which were not up to standard purity past. Recently, the area of direct sowing and throwing seedling increased year by year, and the weed damage increasing serious. Especially, the variety will be greatly welcomed by farmers for its anti-herbicide. The extension of “Fragrant 125S/Bar68-1” would induce to fundamental change of rice farming system in China. Partial results of this study have been published in the authority journals of breeding domain, such as "hybrid rice", "Molecular Breeding". (December 9, 2008)
