The New Corn Variety “Keyu6” was Approved
The new corn variety “Keyu6”, bred by Institute of Subtropical Agriculture, was approved in the Hunan Province Crops Variety Approve Conference held recently. “Keyu6” is the sixth approved new corn variety (including two fresh edible and four normal corn varieties) after entering the sequences of Knowledge Innovation Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
“Keyu6” belongs to a mid-late maturing variety; it needs about 110 days from seeding emergency to mature in Changsha city. The leaf color is invisible green, the medium plant height, ear height, ear length and ear thickness is about 265, 100, 21 and 5.0 cm, respectively. The ear shape is cylinder type, the numbers of kernel rows are from 14 to 16 and the row grains are 40. The grain is half hard type and the color is yellow, the ear axis color is red, the matured 1000-grain weight is about 340 g. The field performance is large/small leaf spot and bacterial wilt diseases resistance, and the sheath blight is light. The content of crude protein, crude fat, crude starch and lysine are 9.99, 4.76, 68.27 and 0.32% respectively, the bulk density is 760 g/L. The average yield per mu was 501.2 kg and increased 5.30% contrasted to control treatment in the regional experiment in 2007; the average yield per mu was 525.6 kg and increased 6.91% contrasted to control treatment in the successive regional experiment in 2008, and the yield increase is significant.(April 3, 2009)
